Mudslides and floods in Sri Lanka have killed 213 people and left 90 missing. However, survivors are plagued by another
fight for life --
disease and shortage of potable water.
“In one or two weeks time there will be huge number of dengue patients and since people have been exposed to muddy and rainy water there is a chance of getting leptospirosis as well,” said Dr. Sugith Wijesundara, a medical officer in Kaduwela.
The local government and public are very concerned about where to get enough potable water.
The water source has been contaminated so the disaster management center in Colombo is frantically looking for alternatives, explained spokesperson Pradeep Kodippili.
