Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said the world had slipped into a new cold war. He said the Syrian conflict could not be ended without cooperation between Russia and the United States. And he insisted there was no evidence that Russian forces had bombed civilians in Syria. Medvedev's statement came after French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Russian bombing of civilians must stop.
US Secretary of state John Kerry told the conference that Russia was hitting legitimate opposition groups and civilians with its bombing campaign in Syria. He said more foreign troops could enter the conflict if the latest peace plan fails.
"If the Assad regime does not live up to its responsibilities and if the Iranians and the Russians do not hold Assad to the promises that they have made to the international community, then the international community obviously is not going to sit there like fools and watch this. There will be an increase of activity to put greater pressure on them," Kerry said.
