Deng Mingjian says his mother asked him to buy two bottles of pesticide to help her commit suicide in a case that has reignited the debate about euthanasia in China.
The migrant worker in Guangdong who originally worked as a farmer in Sichuan province had looked after his paralyzed mother for 20 years until she fell in the bathroom and deteriorated her lingering pain.
Deng told Panyu People's court in Guangzhou, who debated if the death was intentional, that he poisoned his mother "out of her own will" after years of looking after her.
His sisters testified in court that Deng had supported their mother all on his own for all those years and they often heard their mother's saying that she wanted to commit suicide.
One of Deng's colleagues also testified in court saying he never heard Deng complain about his mother.
However, the prosecutor argued Deng had committed the offence of intentional killing but may get a light sentence.
Hua Suying, Deng's wife, told how she hurried home after receiving a call and found her husband looked "weird". He then confessed to police that his mother did not die of natural causes, the report claims.
China currently has no laws surrounding euthanasia. Deng will be sentenced at a later date.
